  • Is my voice recorded or stored?

MarkMate doesn't store any recordings of your voice. Your browser turns your speech into text, and only that text is sent to MarkMate to be written up as feedback. What happens to what you say While you talk, your browser's own speech recognition turns your voice into text. When you stop, that text is sent to MarkMate. MarkMate uses the text to write and place your feedback. The feedback appears in the boxes for you to check, change and save. Tips Avoid saying anything you wouldn't write in a student's feedback. Everything you say ends up as text. The microphone is only on while you're recording, when you can see the timer and the red stop button.

  • My voice feedback went in the wrong place, or all into General feedback

MarkMate usually places spoken feedback under the right heading, but sometimes it can't be sure. When that happens, it puts the comment in General feedback rather than guessing, so nothing is lost. Everything went into General feedback, with a message "Couldn't place your voice note, so it's in General feedback" or "That recording didn't reach MarkMate, so it's in General feedback": something went wrong while sorting your recording. Your words are safe in General feedback. Cut and paste them into the right boxes, or try recording again. "That recording is too long to place. Try a shorter one.": keep each recording to one student, and try to be a bit more concise. Some comments landed under the wrong heading Start each point with what it's about: "For question three…" Add a description in each heading's What to look for, especially if headings have short names like Q1 or AO2. Cut and paste the comment into the right box before saving. Words were misheard Speech recognition isn't perfect, especially with names, subject words or background noise. Always read through before saving. Speaking clearly, in a quiet room, with a headset if you have one, helps a lot. "Nothing placed" MarkMate didn't hear anything it could turn into feedback. Check your microphone and try again.

  • Voice feedback isn't working: microphone and browser problems

If the voice buttons are greyed out, nothing happens when you talk, or you see an error, it's usually one of these. The button is greyed out and says "Needs Chrome, Edge or Safari" Your browser doesn't support voice. Open MarkMate in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Safari. Firefox doesn't work for voice. "Microphone access is blocked — allow it in your browser to dictate." You (or your school's settings) have blocked the microphone for MarkMate. Click the padlock (or settings icon) on the left of the address bar. Find Microphone and change it to Allow. Refresh the page and try again. If it's still blocked, your school may have turned off microphone access. Ask your IT team. "No microphone was found." Your computer can't find a microphone. Check that your headset or microphone is plugged in, or that your laptop's built-in mic is switched on. Then refresh the page. "Dictation needs a connection and lost it." Voice needs an internet connection. Check you're online and try again. Whatever was heard before the connection dropped is kept. The button says "Wait until your voice note is placed" MarkMate is still sorting your last recording. Wait a moment for it to finish. It shows "Listening…" but no words appear Check the right microphone is selected in your computer's sound settings. Check your microphone isn't muted. Many laptops have a mute key or light. Move closer to the microphone and speak a little louder.
