- "Extracting" or "Extraction failed": resource problems
After you upload a resource, MarkMate reads it so the AI can use it. You'll see the resource's status in the library. Status What it means What to do Extracting… MarkMate is reading the document Wait a minute or two. Large files take longer (no badge) Ready to use Nothing. You're all set Extraction failed — retry MarkMate couldn't read it Click the red badge to try again If it keeps failing Scanned or photographed documents: make sure the text is clear, the right way up and in focus. Password-protected PDFs: remove the password and upload it again. Very large files: split them into smaller documents, for example one mark scheme per paper. Unusual layouts: save the document as a PDF and try again. Important: A resource that hasn't finished extracting, or failed, won't be used in marking. Check that your resources show no badge before clicking Draft feedback. You can use the Status filter in the library to find any resources that failed.
- How to delete a resource
If a resource is out of date or was uploaded by mistake, you can delete it from the library. Steps Click Resources at the top of the screen. Click the resource. Click Delete resource. Confirm. "Delete this resource? This cannot be undone." Before you delete, check: The resource is removed from every assessment it's attached to, including your colleagues'. Future marking on those assessments won't use it. Feedback and grades already given aren't affected. This can't be undone. Only want to stop using it on one assessment? Remove it from that assessment instead. See How to attach a resource to an assessment.
- How to edit a resource
You can rename a resource, add a description, change its type, or swap in an updated file, such as a corrected mark scheme. Steps Click Resources at the top of the screen. Click the resource you want to change. Change the title, the description ("What's in this document?") or the type. To upload a newer version of the document, choose Replace file and pick the new file. To keep the current one, choose Keep existing file. Save your changes. Good to know Replacing the file updates it everywhere it's attached, including colleagues' assessments. After replacing a file, MarkMate reads it again (Extracting…), and it may rename or retype it based on the new contents.
- How to attach a resource to an assessment
Attaching a resource tells MarkMate to use it when marking that assessment. You can attach as many as you need. Option A: when you create or edit the assessment Create a new assessment, or edit one (Markbook → ••• → Edit). Under the assessment name, click Attach resource. Search for the resource and click it. Repeat to attach more. Click Create assessment or Save changes. Option B: upload straight from the marking screen Open the assessment. In the right-hand panel, find Marking Resources. Click Add a mark scheme, or drag a file onto Drop the mark scheme here. The file is attached to this assessment and saved to your Resources library. To remove a resource from an assessment On the set-up page, click the × on the resource, then save. Or, On the marking screen, under Marking Resources, click remove next to the file. Removing a resource from an assessment doesn't delete it from the library. Good to know: Feedback you've already drafted doesn't change when you attach a new resource. To use it, click Draft feedback again for the students you want to re-mark.
- What types of resource can I add, and how do they help AI marking?
You can upload seven types of resource. MarkMate's AI reads every resource you attach to an assessment and uses the parts that apply to each heading it's marking. The type helps you and your colleagues find the right document in the library. Type What it is How it helps marking Mark scheme Marks, levels, model answers or success criteria The biggest help. The AI marks against it directly Work example A marked example or a model answer Shows what good work looks like at each level Lesson plan The plan for the lesson the work came from Shows what students were taught and expected to do Lesson sequence A series of lessons Gives the bigger picture of what led up to the work Unit overview What a unit or topic covers Helps the AI understand the expected content Curriculum overview Your curriculum for a year or key stage Sets the expected standard Subject overview An overview of your subject General background Tips for the best results Attach only what's relevant to this piece of work. One clear mark scheme beats five loosely related documents. Keep attachments short and focused. If you attach a lot, very long documents may be cut short, so put the most important one first. No mark scheme? The AI marks against the expected standard for your class's year group. A mark scheme, or a marked example, makes its marking much closer to yours.
- How to upload resources to the library
Upload a document once and it's ready to attach to any assessment, for you and your colleagues. Steps Click Resources at the top of the screen. Click Upload. Drag your files onto Drop files here or click to browse, or click it to choose files. Choose what type of document it is, for example Mark scheme or Lesson plan. Click Upload. MarkMate shows Extracting… while it reads the document. When that disappears, the resource is ready to use. Limits File types: PDF, Word (.docx), PNG and JPG Size: up to 10 MB per file Number: up to 20 files at once Good to know: MarkMate reads each document and may rename it and choose its type for you, based on what's inside. It also adds a short description. You can change any of these afterwards.
- What is the Resources library?
The Resources library is where you keep the documents that help MarkMate mark like you: mark schemes, lesson plans, curriculum overviews, example work and more. Upload them once, then attach them to any assessment. MarkMate's AI reads them while it marks. Where to find it: click Resources at the top of the screen. What you can do there Upload documents (PDF, Word, PNG or JPG). Search by name, and filter by file type or status. Edit a resource's title, description or type, or replace its file. Delete resources you no longer need. Good to know Resources are shared with everyone in your school's MarkMate. Colleagues can attach your mark schemes to their assessments, and you can use theirs. Mark schemes you upload from the marking screen are saved to the library automatically.

Your work is still on the screen. If you try to leave without saving MarkMate warns you. Click Save & continue to save and move on. - "Couldn't draft feedback": what to do
If Draft feedback can't finish, MarkMate tells you why under the student's work. Here's what each message means. Message What to do "Upload this student's work first." Add their work under Student Work, then try again. "Still reading this student's work. Try again in a minute." The work has just been uploaded and MarkMate is still reading it. Wait a minute, then click Draft feedback again. "We couldn't read [file name]. Remove the file or upload a clearer copy." That file is too blurry, dark or damaged. Remove it and upload a better photo or scan. "We couldn't read this work. Upload a clearer scan or a typed transcript." MarkMate couldn't read enough of the work to mark it. Try clearer photos: good light, taken from directly above, the whole page in shot. "Drafting was interrupted." or "Something went wrong while drafting. Try again." Click Draft feedback again. If it keeps happening, contact support@markmate.co.uk. Tips for photos that MarkMate can read Use good light and avoid shadows across the page. Hold your phone directly above the page, not at an angle. Fit one page per photo, with the whole page in the picture. Make sure the writing is in focus.
