  • How to remove students from a class

If a student leaves your class or was added by mistake, you can remove them. You can remove one student or several at once. To remove one student Open your class and click the Students tab. Click the three dots (•••) at the end of the student's row. Click Remove from class. To remove several students at once Open your class and click the Students tab. Tick the box next to each student you want to remove. A bar appears at the bottom of the screen. Click Remove from class. Important Students are removed straight away. There's no "Are you sure?" message, so check before you click. Once a student is removed, their marks and feedback no longer appear in this class. If you add them again, they'll start with no marks.

  • How to change a student's name or pronouns

If a student's name is spelt wrong, they prefer a different name, or you want to record their pronouns, you can update their details at any time. Pronouns help MarkMate write reports correctly. Steps Open your class and click the Students tab. Find the student and click the three dots (•••) at the end of their row. Click Edit details… Change their First name, Last name or Pronouns (for example she/her, he/him or they/them). Click Save. Can't click Edit details? The student is managed by your school's MIS.

  • How to import students from a CSV file

If your class list is exported from your school's MIS, such as SIMS, iSAMS or Bromcom, you can upload the file instead of typing names. MarkMate reads the file and matches the first name and surname columns for you. Before you start Export your class list from your MIS as a .csv file. The first row of the file should be the column headings, for example Forename and Surname. Steps Open your class and click the Students tab. Click Add students. Under or, click Browse and choose your CSV file. You can also drag the file onto that box. Under Map columns, check that MarkMate has chosen the right columns: First name → for example Forename Last name → for example Surname If one is wrong, click it and choose the right column. Check the list of names shown underneath. Click Add [number] students. If something goes wrong "We couldn't find any names in this file": the file probably has no heading row, or isn't a .csv file. Click Try another file, or Paste names instead. "Rows are missing a first or last name": check you've chosen the right columns, or fix the empty rows in your file and upload it again. Full names all in one column (for example "Bryant, Caleb"): open the file, copy that column, and paste it into the box instead.

  • How to add students to a class

You can type names in one at a time, or copy and paste your whole class list in one go, for example from a register, a spreadsheet or an email. MarkMate works out first names and surnames for you. Steps Open your class and click the Students tab. Click Add students. (If the class is new and empty, the box is already open.) In the box, type or paste your students' names, one name per line. Either of these works: Ava Johnson Johnson, Ava Check the button at the bottom. It shows how many students will be added, for example Add 28 students. Click that button. Good to know Every student needs a first name and a surname. If one is missing, MarkMate shows a red message telling you which line to fix. Initials are fine. Students with two first names are fine. Mary Anne Smith becomes first name Mary Anne, surname Smith. To copy from Excel or Google Sheets, select a single column of full names and paste it in. You can add more students later by clicking Add students again.

  • How to create a new class

Setting up a class takes about a minute. You give it a name, a year group and a subject, then add your students. Steps Click Classes at the top of the screen. Click New class. In Class name, type a name you'll recognise, for example Year 9 English or 8X Science. In Year group, choose the year. You can pick anything from EYFS to Year 14, or Higher Education. In Subject, start typing the subject and click it in the list. Click Create class. MarkMate takes you straight to the Students tab so you can add your students. See How to add students to a class. Tip: MarkMate fills in the year group from the last class you created, which saves time if you teach several classes in the same year.

  • What is a class in MarkMate?

A class is a group of students you teach, for example "Year 9 English" or "4B Maths". Everything in MarkMate is kept inside a class: your students, your assessments, their marks and feedback, and their reports. You need to set up a class before you can start marking. What you'll find inside a class When you open a class, you'll see a row of tabs at the top: Markbook: your list of assessments for this class. Start or continue marking from here. Overview: a grid showing every student's grades for every assessment. Students: the students in the class. Add, edit or remove them here. Reports: write and manage reports for your students. Settings: change the class name, year group or subject, or delete the class. Good to know You can have as many classes as you need. You'll find all your classes by clicking Classes at the top of the screen. If your school has connected MarkMate to its MIS (such as SIMS, Arbor or Bromcom), your classes may already be set up for you.

  • Why aren't my feedback coversheets printing? (Common problems)

If nothing happens when you click Print, a student is missing, or the page doesn't look right, it's usually one of these. "Nothing to print yet" None of the students have a grade or feedback for this assessment yet. Mark some work, then try again. A student is missing from my coversheets A student only gets a coversheet if they have at least one grade or comment for this assessment. Check that you've marked their work on the Overview tab. Nothing opened when I clicked Print Coversheets open in a new browser tab. If nothing appears: Look for a pop-up blocked icon in your browser's address bar. Click it and choose to always allow pop-ups from MarkMate. Click Print again. The writing on a coversheet is very small MarkMate always fits each student onto one A4 page, so long feedback makes the text smaller. To make room, reduce the Handwriting lines, or untick items under Include that you don't need. The page is cut off or has a large blank border In your printer settings, set the paper size to A4 and the scale to 100% or Actual size, not "Fit to page".

  • How to choose what appears on your feedback coversheets

You can decide what's printed on each coversheet, change how grades are shown, and add your own line at the bottom, such as your school's name. Steps Open the print window for your assessment (Markbook → ••• → Print…). Click Report sheet. Under Include, tick or untick: Student name Class name Date: the date the assessment was created Grades: the grade next to each heading Overall feedback: printed in a General Feedback box Under Style, choose a Grade format: Word: the full grade name (the default) Abbreviation: for example "WT" or "EXS" Marks: for example "7/10" In Footer text, type what you'd like at the bottom of every page, for example "Oakfield Primary School, Year 4". If you leave it blank, it says "Feedback provided with MarkMate". Click Print. Good to know: Grade format is greyed out when Grades is unticked.

  • How to change the coversheet style

MarkMate has two looks for coversheets. Formal is clean and simple in black and white, and suits secondary students. Playful uses a larger, friendly font and soft colours, which works well for younger children. Steps Open the print window for your assessment (Markbook → ••• → Print…). Click Report sheet. Under Tone, click Formal or Playful. Click Print. Tip: Playful coversheets use colour, so print them on a colour printer for the best result.

  • How to add space for students to respond to feedback (DIRT / response lines)

If you use DIRT time, or want students to reply to your feedback, MarkMate can add a box of handwriting lines at the bottom of every coversheet. Students then have space to write their response right under your comments. Steps Open the print window for your assessment (Markbook → ••• → Print…). Click Report sheet. Under Style, find Handwriting lines. Click + to add lines, or − to remove them. You can add up to 20. Click Print. Good to know The box is called Student Response. With the Playful style it's called My Response. Set it back to 0 to remove the box. Everything is fitted onto one A4 page. If you add lots of lines and a student has long feedback, the writing will get smaller to make room.
