How to Upload a Marking Document

A marking document is any reference material that helps Mark Mate understand how a piece of work should be assessed. This could be a mark scheme, a set of success criteria, a curriculum overview, or an assessment rubric, anything that describes what you're looking for in your students' work.
When you attach a marking document to an assessment, Mark Mate's AutoMark feature uses it as context to generate more accurate, tailored feedback for each student. Without a marking document, AutoMark relies solely on the learning objectives you've set. With one attached, it can draw on the specific detail in your document, grade boundaries, key terminology, expected content, to give feedback that's much closer to what you'd write yourself.
You don't need to upload a marking document for every assessment, but it's recommended whenever you have one available.
Supported file types: PDF, Word documents (DOCX), and images (JPG, PNG) — up to 10MB in size.
How to Find the Marking Documents Page
Click "Documents" in the top navigation bar. On mobile, tap the menu icon and select "Documents" from the sidebar.
You'll be taken to the Marking Documents page, where you can see all the documents you've previously uploaded.
How to Upload a New Marking Document
On the Marking Documents page, click the "Upload Document" button in the top right corner.
A window will appear where you can fill in the details:
Title — Give your document a clear name so you can find it later, for example "KS3 Science Mark Scheme" or "Year 10 English Success Criteria".
Description (optional) — Add a short note about what the document covers, if you'd like.
File — Drag and drop your file onto the upload area, or click it to browse your computer. You can upload a PDF, Word document (DOCX), JPG, or PNG up to 10MB.
Click "Upload Document" to save. Your document will appear on the Marking Documents page straight away.
Mark Mate will automatically read and extract the content from PDF and Word files so that AutoMark can use it. Image files are stored as they are.
How to Attach a Marking Document to an Assessment
You don't need to be on the Marking Documents page to attach a document to an assessment. You can do it directly when creating or editing a piece of work.
When creating or editing an assessment, look for the "Marking Document" field on the left-hand side of the form.
If you've already uploaded documents, select one from the dropdown list.
If you haven't uploaded one yet, click "Upload Marking Document" to upload a new file without leaving the page.
The document will be linked to your assessment and used by AutoMark when marking student work.
You can change or remove the attached document at any time by editing the assessment.
How to Edit or Delete a Marking Document
On the Marking Documents page, click on the document you'd like to manage.
A window will open where you can:
Update the title or description.
Replace the file with a new one if needed.
Delete the document by clicking the delete button at the bottom. This will permanently remove the document.
Click "Save" to apply your changes.
Tips
You can search for documents by name or description using the search bar at the top of the Marking Documents page.
A single marking document can be attached to multiple assessments — you don't need to upload the same file more than once.
If your school has shared marking documents, these will also appear in your list and can be attached to your assessments.
