How to Print Coversheets

  • 3 min read

A coversheet is a printable feedback document that you can generate for each student in your class. It brings together everything from an assessment, the learning objectives, the grades you've given, and the written feedback, into a single, professionally formatted page that you can print and hand out or attach to a student's work.

Coversheets are a great way to give students a clear summary of how they've done on a piece of work. Each coversheet includes the student's name, the assessment details, their grades and feedback for each learning objective, and any general feedback you've written. You can also include a blank response area where students can reflect on their feedback in writing.

Mark Mate offers two coversheet styles, a Formal template with a clean, professional look (ideal for secondary school), and an Informal template with a colourful, friendly design (ideal for primary school).

Important: Coversheets are only generated for students who have received feedback. If you haven't written any feedback or given any grades for a student yet, they won't appear in the coversheet list.

How to Open the Coversheet Printer

  1. From your Dashboard, click on the class that contains the assessment you'd like to print coversheets for.

  2. On your Class Page, find the assessment in the assessment list.

  3. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) on the right-hand side of the assessment row.

  4. Select "Print Coversheets" from the dropdown menu.

  5. The coversheet printer will open, showing a preview of the first student's coversheet on the right and your customisation options on the left.

Customising Your Coversheets

Before printing, you can adjust what appears on the coversheet using the options on the left-hand side of the panel.

Choosing a template

At the top, you can switch between two templates:

  • Formal — A clean, professional layout using a standard font. Best suited for secondary school or more formal settings.

  • Informal — A colourful, playful layout with rounded borders and a friendly font. Great for primary school students.

Header

  • Header Text — By default, this shows your class name, but you can change it to anything you like (e.g. your school name or department).

  • Logo — Upload your school logo (PNG, JPG, GIF, or SVG, up to 2MB) to have it appear at the top of each coversheet. You can remove it at any time.

Work Details

Choose which pieces of information appear in the details section at the top of the coversheet. You can toggle each one on or off:

  • Student Name

  • Class

  • Assessment Title

  • Date

Marking Content

Control which parts of your marking are shown on the coversheet:

  • Objectives — Show the learning objective headings.

  • Grades — Show the grade badges (rubric levels or scores) for each objective.

  • Feedback — Show the written feedback you gave for each objective.

  • Overall Feedback — Show any general feedback you wrote for the student.

If your assessment uses a grade set, you'll also see a Grade Format option where you can choose between showing the full grade name (e.g. "Exceeds Expectations") or just the abbreviation (e.g. "EE").

Student Response

If you'd like students to write a reflection after reading their feedback, turn on the Student Response toggle. This adds a section with blank lines at the bottom of the coversheet. You can set the number of lines from 1 to 20, depending on how much space you'd like to give them.

Footer

Add optional text at the bottom of every coversheet — for example, your school's name, a motivational message, or a reminder.

Previewing Your Coversheets

On the right-hand side of the panel, you'll see a live preview of what the coversheet will look like. Any changes you make to the options on the left are reflected in the preview straight away.

You can use the arrow buttons above the preview to move between students and check how each coversheet looks. The counter (e.g. "3 of 12") shows which student you're currently viewing.

Printing Your Coversheets

Once you're happy with how everything looks, you have two options:

  • Print [Student Name] — Prints a coversheet for just the student currently shown in the preview.

  • Print All (n) — Prints coversheets for all students who have feedback, with each student on a separate page.

Clicking either button will generate a PDF that you can then print or save to your computer.
