How to Print Labels

  • 3 min read

Labels are small, sticker-sized printouts that contain your feedback for each student. They're designed to be printed using a dedicated label printer and stuck directly onto a student's work, giving them quick, clear feedback without needing a full printed report.

Each label can include the student's name, the date, your name, the learning objective heading, the grade, and your written feedback. If you've set your work up with multiple learning objectives, Mark Mate can either print a separate label for each objective or combine everything onto a single label — whichever works best for you.

Labels are a great time-saver for giving physical feedback, especially when you want something more personal than a written comment in the margin but quicker than a full coversheet.

How to Print Labels for a Whole Class

  1. From your Dashboard, click on the class that contains the assessment you'd like to print labels for.

  2. On your Class Page, find the assessment in the assessment list.

  3. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) on the right-hand side of the assessment row.

  4. Select "Print Labels" from the dropdown menu.

  5. If the assessment has been marked, your labels will be generated as a PDF that you can print or save.

If the assessment hasn't been marked yet, you'll see a message letting you know that there's no feedback to print.

How to Print Labels for an Individual Student

  1. From your Class Page, click on the assessment to open the Marking Page.

  2. Select the student you'd like to print labels for from the student list.

  3. In the header area, click the printer icon to generate their labels straight away, or click the settings icon (cog) to customise the label options before printing.

Customising Your Label Settings

Mark Mate saves your label preferences so you don't need to set them up every time. To access your label settings, click the settings icon (cog) when printing, or go to your Settings page.

The settings are organised into four sections:

Label Info

Control what identifying information appears on each label:

  • Student Name — Show or hide the student's name.

  • Date — Show or hide today's date.

  • Teacher Name — Show or hide your name. If turned on, you can also choose a title (e.g. Mr, Mrs, Miss, Ms, Dr) which will appear before your surname.

Content

Choose which parts of your marking appear on the label:

  • Objective Heading — Show or hide the name of the learning objective.

  • Feedback — Show or hide your written feedback for each objective.

  • General Feedback — Include any overall feedback you wrote for the student.

Grade

  • Show Grade — Toggle whether grades appear on the label.

  • Grade Format — If turned on, choose how the grade is displayed:

    • Abbreviation — A short code, e.g. "EE" or "DV".

    • Full word — The complete grade name, e.g. "Exceeds Expectations".

    • Score — A numeric score, e.g. "8/10".

Appearance

Fine-tune how your labels look:

  • Fit to one label — When turned on, all of a student's feedback is combined onto a single label. When turned off, each learning objective gets its own separate label.

  • Show dividers — Add dashed lines between objectives when feedback is combined onto one label.

  • Font — Choose from five font options:

    • Default (clean and simple)

    • Letter-join (a cursive handwriting style)

    • Comic Sans (informal and friendly)

    • OpenDyslexic (designed for accessibility)

    • Lexend (a modern, easy-to-read font)

  • Label Size — Pick a preset size to match your label sheets, or set a custom size:

    • 100 x 60 mm (standard, the default)

    • 90 x 29 mm (address label size)

    • 62 x 29 mm (small label)

    • Custom (set your own width and height, from 20mm to 300mm)

Saving Your Settings

Once you've set up your label preferences, click "Save Settings" to save them for next time, or "Save & Print" to save your settings and generate the labels straight away. Your settings are remembered across all your classes and assessments, so you only need to set them up once.
