How to Create a Class

  • Mar 5
  • 2 min read

Creating a class in Mark Mate is the first step to getting started with marking your students' work.

A class brings together your students under a subject and year group, making it easy to assign and mark work in one place.

Once your class is set up, you'll be ready to start uploading assignments and marking.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Open the Create Class page

From your dashboard, click "Create Class" to open the class creation form.

2. Enter your class details

You'll see a form on the left-hand side with three fields to fill in:

  • Class Name — Give your class a name that helps you identify it, for example "Year 10 Physics" or "9B English". The name must be at least 3 characters long.

  • Year Group — Select the year group from the dropdown list (e.g. Year 7, Year 8, etc.).

  • Subject — Search for and select the subject your class is studying. You can type in the search box to quickly find it.

3. Add your students

On the right-hand side of the page, you can add students to your class. You have up to 50 students per class. There are a few ways to do this:

  • Add students one at a time — Click the "Add Student" button to add a blank row, then type in their first name and last name.

  • Import a list — Click "Import List" to open a window where you can paste a list of student names. You can paste names in formats like "Last Name, First Name" or "First Name Last Name" — MarkMate will figure out the rest.

  • Upload a file — Drag and drop a CSV or Excel file directly onto the form. MarkMate supports .csv, .txt, .xlsx, and .xls files.

  • Paste from clipboard — If you have a list copied (e.g. from a spreadsheet), simply press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on Mac) while on the page and your students will be imported automatically.

Helpful tips for managing your student list:

  • If a student's first and last name are the wrong way round, click the swap icon next to their name to switch them.

  • Need to swap all names at once? Use the "Swap All" button.

  • To remove a single student, click the remove icon next to their row.

  • To clear the entire list, click "Remove All".

4. Create your class

Once you're happy with the details and student list, click the "Create Class" button. Mark Mate will save your class and take you straight to the class page, where you can start uploading work for marking.

If you change your mind, click "Cancel" to go back without saving.
