How to Create a Grade Set

A grade set is a collection of achievement levels that you use to grade your students' work. Instead of giving a numeric score, a grade set lets you select from a set of levels that you define, for example Exceeding, Secure, Developing, and Emerging, or traditional letter grades like A, B, C, D.
When you create an assessment and add learning objectives, you can choose "Grading Rubric" as the grading method for any objective.
This is where your grade sets come in, you pick one of your grade sets, and when you mark each student's work, you'll select the level that best matches their performance for that objective. This makes your marking quicker and more consistent, because you're choosing from the same set of levels for every student.
You can create as many grade sets as you need. For example, you might have one for GCSE grades (9–1), another for effort grades, and another for key stage descriptors. Once created, a grade set can be reused across as many assessments as you like.
How to Get to the Grade Sets Page
Managing your own grade sets:
Go to your Settings (click your profile or the settings option in the navigation).
Click "Grade Sets" in the sidebar.
How to Create a New Grade Set
On the Grade Sets page, click the "Create Set" button.
A panel will appear where you can set up your grade set.
Fill in the details:
Name — Give your grade set a clear name so you can recognise it when selecting it during marking, for example "GCSE Grades (9–1)" or "KS3 Descriptors".
Description (optional) — Add a short note about when or how you'd use this grade set.
Share with school — If you'd like other teachers in your school to be able to use this grade set, turn on the "Share with school" toggle. If you leave it off, only you will be able to see and use it.
Add your grade levels:
This is where you define the individual levels within your grade set. You'll see a section for adding levels, and each level needs three things:
Name — The full name of the level, for example "Excellent", "Secure", or "Grade 7".
Abbreviation — A short label (up to 10 characters) that will appear as a badge when you're marking, for example "A", "SE", or "7".
Colour — Pick a colour for the level from the palette. This helps you quickly tell levels apart when marking. For example, you might use green for your top level, amber for the middle, and red for the lowest.
To add more levels, click the "Add Level" button. You can add as many levels as you need. If you want to remove a level, click the remove button next to it (you must always have at least one level).
Once you're happy with your levels, click "Create Set" to save your grade set.
What Happens Next
Your new grade set will appear on the Grade Sets page straight away. From here, you can use it whenever you create or edit an assessment, just choose "Grading Rubric" as the grading method on a learning objective and select your grade set from the dropdown.
