We love ed-tech. We’ve covered previously some of the best uses of ed-tech for the classroom. Now, however, there could be another to add to the list. Sparx, an Exeter-based ed-tech startup has been granted an investment from Oxygen House. The ethical and impact-focused group of companies will invest €22 million in Sparx. Read on to find out more about Sparx’s innovative classroom tool!
Sparx was founded in 2010 and is a classroom and home-based solution. It uses machine learning, personalised content, and data analytics to help improve students’ learning in maths. It also helps teachers be much more effective. Their first product, Sparx Maths launched in 2018. It focuses on 11-16 year old students and combines high-quality content. This includes 32,000 carefully designed maths questions and an adaptive AI technology platform.
The platform gives teachers daily insights into class and student progress. This gives teachers the ability to quickly identify trends. It also provides every student with a personalised learning experience, searching thousands of questions to deliver the right level of challenge to students
The initial investment from Oxygen House has helped Sparx to work closely with schools to research, test, and develop an approach to learning maths which is highly engaging. This investment follows an initial offering of €33.5 million which helped to establish Sparx and to develop and test the technology.
We’re big fans of technology making teachers’ lives easier at Mark Mate, and now we’d love to hear what you think. Are you a maths teacher? Do you think you’d make use of a product like Sparx? Would it make your life in the classroom easier? Let us know in the comments!

I put my headset on after 3pm and can feedback on a set of books in about 35 minutes. If I’m marking while the students are taking a test I type then print out the labels later. I make my own hints/tips labels too, this saves me so much time rather than write the same advice over & over. The software is quick & easy to set up. The online support either via the webpage or Facebook group is excellent.read less
